How to Join Our Performance Teams
At Principal Creative & Performing Arts, our Performance Teams give dancers the opportunity to train, perform, and grow in an environment that values artistry, teamwork, and discipline. These teams are designed for dancers who are ready to take the next step—developing stronger technique, performance quality, and confidence both on and off the stage.
Step 1: Build a Foundation
For our youngest dancers (ages 5–7), we recommend at least one year of ballet or jazz before auditioning. Many of our team dancers began with our preschool and early elementary classes—this foundation helps them develop body awareness, rhythm, and confidence early on.
If your child is newer to dance, that’s okay! We can help you plan a path that builds toward future team opportunities while keeping their experience positive and inspiring.
Step 2: Ramp Up Training
Older dancers who are interested in joining a team should plan a “ramp-up year”—a season of focused training before auditioning.
We recommend a minimum of 2 classes per week, and ideally 3–5 hours of dance weekly during this period.
Current team members train anywhere from 3 to 10+ hours per week, depending on age and level.
That means new dancers should plan to increase their training volume to build strength and close the experience gap. Dancers don’t need to be at the same level as current team members when they audition—we’re looking for potential, work ethic, and attitude. Our teachers and directors can help identify the right next steps to get your dancer ready.
Step 3: Auditions & Placement
Auditions typically take place in late spring (April–May), and teams are set by June for the following season.
We make studio-wide announcements with exact dates as the time approaches.
Dancers selected for a team commit to a minimum number of weekly classes, depending on their age and style. This helps ensure steady growth and a successful performance experience.
Step 4: What It Means to Be on a Team
Team dancers represent the heart of our studio. They train with intensity and focus, but they also support each other, celebrate progress, and model good sportsmanship at every event.
While teams do perform at competitions, we emphasize performance, not placement—growth, artistry, and teamwork always come first. Each dancer’s success is measured by their improvement, consistency, and love of dance.
Step 5: Stay Connected
Our Performance Teams hold choreography sessions in July, with classes beginning in August and continuing through the performance season. Families receive detailed schedules, costume info, and event calendars through our Team Handbook and studio communications.
